The Connection of Everything - Internet of Things

In this revolutionizing time phase, when cars are keyless, clocks are needleless and smart phones getting smarter day by day, we have a phenomenon for staying connected. Yes, the Internet of Things (IoT) is now a well-known field, influencing information technology, management, business and what not. It is a network of technology based devices, digital or mechanical, mechanism or objects, animals and humans that are able to transfer information over a series of connections without any supervision by a human or a computer.

With several technologies emerging from time to time, automation and systems, wireless transferring, control systems, security, all of these contribute to the working of the Internet of things. For a normal person, this terminology is mostly used in the industry in concept of a smart home; automated appliances and system functioning in a house connected to the smart devices enabling the person to monitor, control and alter any functions.

In the early 80’s, the concept of smart work was on the verge when coke vending machines were on the discussion topic, which later became the first internet operated machine, enabling newer projects to be researched and exploited. Small chunks of data are converted into larger packets of integrated codes and messages that lead to innovation from an automated machine to completely human-free production units of factories.

Nowadays, research and development is being performed on the application of IoT, its connectivity, working in different perspectives such as the transport sector, homes, medical department, public services, consumer and many other aspects. The prior studies were conducted on the controlling and handling of data but the areas of the resources from which the data is obtained need to be worked on. This brings in principle of management, connecting allocation of resources with the internet of things (IoT). The idea is to build a virtual store of resources and manage it accordingly, applying different approaches towards performance oriented results with the help of technology.

Some of the application used widely are listed and elaborated below:

Consumer Application:

The households or simply those who work in offices for a living are the ones having the first impact. The consumer market have several application in the prospect of IoT.

  1. Smart Home:This is an uprising concept working on the principle of IoT, and people are inclined towards a much smarter approach towards living. IoT based devices are handy in home automation in lighting, heating, security systems and air conditioning etc. Energy and Finance reduction are an effect of long term usage of these devices.

It is based on the platform of smart devices connected in a network that an owner has the capability to control and command, whether at home or away. By the Usage of Alexa and Siri voice command systems to control appliances at home, even without the usage of a Wi-Fi connection.

  1. Old-age care or baby-sitting:this is a further classified benefit of a smart home. This is very advantageous to keep an eye and help those who need special care and those in the old-age. The use of assistive technology makes it easier to provide special care and accommodation of an individual. Sensors that send precaution messages for medical emergencies can be fitted, voice command for those suffering from eyesight problems and hearing aids to those who cannot hear. This will not only reduce the caution hazard but also maintain a quality of life.

Commercial Applications:

  • Medicinal and health-care:The internet of medical or health things aims to analyze medicinal field and health care, gathering reports, data and monitoring medicinal observations. This is also termed as smart medical/healthcare, making healthcare automated with medical supplies and services. It helps in notifying emergencies, and diagnose medical conditions that can be either related to blood pressure, heart rate, blood sugar levels or much complex systems such as the pacemaker. Made with low-cost sensors make it easier and accessible for everyone to use them and also for the caretaker to easily power off them when a treatment is completed. There is a basic role of IoMT in dealing also dealing with chronic ailments and in their prevention.
  • Transportation:In this time zone, transportation is needed to be fastest and it has become a necessity for people travelling for schools, colleges and offices/workplace. From smart parking to smart traffic control, with e-fine systems and logistics, IoT covers the area of transport as well. Wireless sensors tell the weight limit that a container has. GPS, speed and temperature sensors are used to increase the efficiency of transportation.

Industrial Applications: 

Industrial IoT aids in manufacturing, packaging, technology operations and workers work efficiency. This manner the connection of operations with IoT provides means of monitoring and analyzing industrial system.

  • Manufacturing:  The non-stop production unit in different sectors of textile, food and several industries make manufacturing a basic source of income for many workers as well as is a key factor for sustenance of an industry. Allocative efficiency of resources and process controlling results in decreasing energy consumption and cost. An IoT intelligence systems controls digital electronics, equipments usage and supple chain.
  • Agriculture:This sector is a primary source to feed a economy and modern day technology has done much to digitalize this conventional mode of earning. Temperature sensors are not only handy in transport control but also in the dairy or agricultural sector. IoT connects people with the environmental hazards that can target their production capacity and thus, profits. Mode3rn technology based farming techniques make it feasible for farmers to work on quality along with an increased quantity.

The current Era:

The boost in the usage of IoT devices has increased manifold. The large amount of applications are creating opportunities for penetrating into the field of information technology and computing, aiming to provide quality, benefits economically, socially and reducing human intervention in many matters. According to the statistics, it is estimated to be a 30 billion quantity of IoT devices by 2020, projecting its market value to be 7.1 trilliopn dollars in the future.
